The average adult has thirty-two teeth by the age of eighteen. Sixteen teeth on the top and sixteen on the bottom. Each tooth in the mouth has a specific name and function which allows food to be broken down to the point of be able to be swallowed. All of the teeth work together to provide function and esthetics.
However, the average adultʼs mouth can only hold 28 teeth. When the last teeth try to come into the mouth and there is not enough room, several problems may occur, such as pain, infection, swelling, cyst formation, and possible crowding of adjacent teeth. These teeth are known as third molars or wisdom teeth.
When wisdom teeth are aligned properly and the surrounding gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not need to be removed. Unfortunately, this does not generally occur. Many wisdom teeth are not aligned properly and will create many problems if not removed. By having your wisdom teeth evaluated by the doctors at Utah Surgical Arts they will be able to determine if the wisdom teeth need to be removed to prevent future problems from occurring. Early evaluation, preferably mid teens, is desirable since many complications and risks can be avoided by early intervention.
The doctors at Utah Surgical Arts are highly trained to perform removal of wisdom teeth. All outpatient surgery is performed under the appropriate anesthesia for maximum patient care. Having wisdom teeth removed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons decreases significantly postoperative pain, swelling, and discomfort. At the request of my sister, I decided to have Utah Surgical Arts give me a new, stronger chin. Never being one to really criticize my own chin, at first I was skeptical about how it would turn out. The surgery was fast, Dr Park was great, the recovery was as expected. Looking back after, I'm glad I made the decision to go through with it, my new chin adds adds more confidence to my profile. Dr Park was fantastic to work with both before and after the surgery, and the staff was caring and terrific.
